In October 2014, M&D made the decision to participate in the Techno Girl Job Shadowing Programme, effective 2015.

This programme is aimed at helping female students, from as early as Grade 9, to choose a relevant and suitable field of study, and thus career, by exposing them to the working environment in its entirety – from Head Office duties to Site Work. Techno Girl is also an attempt to encourage and increase the intake of women in careers related to the STEM  (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) fields.

The girls will spend one week of each school holiday (March, June & September) with professionals within the company on a pre-planned schedule which will hopefully include a period of personal growth and development for the girls. During this time they will go through an orientation in which they will learn about the company and be afforded the opportunity to ask questions on the basic structure and workings of Murray and Dickson as a company and take a tour of our site at Wits University.

The girls will start off their job shadowing at head office, learning about quantity surveying, finance, procurement and SHERQ (Saftey, Health, Environmental, Risk and Quality).

This year, April 2015, will be M&D’s first time hosting the 4 Grade 9 girls from Diepsloot Combined School who were selected for this programme based on their being in the Top 10 of their grade. We hope to encourage the girls to keep working hard and take up a career in the STEM field.

Soon we will be posting some feedback from Ayanda, Boipelo, Cornie and Thabiso on their time with us.
